The head of Algeria’s army has called for President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to step down, following weeks of protest against his rule.
He has urged the use of a constitutional move that would deem Bouteflika declared unfit for office.
The direct intervention by the military follows the president saying he would not stand for reelection, among a raft of other moves designed to placate the demonstrators.
