US President Donald Trump has issued an emergency order grounding all Boeing 737 Max aircraft. In the wake of a crash of an Ethiopian airliner, many authorities around the world ordered the plane to stop flying days ago. The latest developments pose a fundamental threat to Boeing’s operations. The 737 Max is the fastest selling aircraft in Boeing’s history and a cornerstone of its strategy. The planemaker employs tens of thousands, and is worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Ratings agency Fitch warns the issue could threaten credit ratings of Boeing and its suppliers, expecting lengthy groundings, delivery delays and even order cancellations. Case in point: on a state visit to Ethiopia earlier this week, French President Emmanuel Macron reportedly dicussed a new order of Airbus planes for state carrier Ethiopian, a long-standing Boeing customer and the very airline just struck by the latest crash.
