A third of Rohingya villages emptied after Burmese military crackdown

According to a government spokesman nearly a third of Rohingya villages have been emptied after the violence broke out two-and-a-half weeks ago. Those 400,000 villagers who have left their homes behind are now in Bangladesh, where aid agencies are struggling to cope with the huge numbers of Rohingya refugees. The International Organization for Migration has appealed for $77 million dollars in funding, but that is still not enough to cover shelter, food and other aid for those fleeing the conflict.

Al Jazeera’s Bernard Smith reports.
