Argentina: Lower house passes bill to legalise abortion

The Argentinean Chamber of Deputies voted in favour of a bill legalising abortion, after a two-day debate, in a session in Buenos Aires on Thursday.

With 129 votes in favour and 123 against, the bill would allow abortion up to the 14th week of pregnancy.

Initially, the electronic voting panel showed 131 positive votes, but local media said “there had been a counting mistake”. The positive votes were still the majority, so this “counting mistake” didn’t change the final result.

The bill now has to be approved by the Senate to become law. According to local media, Argentinean President Mauricio Macri said he would sign the bill if approved.

Currently, Argentina only allows abortion in cases of rape or when the mother’s life is considered to be in danger.
