Argentine President Mauricio Macri led the closing of the 54th Summit of the Common Market of the South (Mercosur) at the Belgrano Station Convention Center in the city of Santa Fe, Wednesday. He was meeting with the leaders of Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay; in addition to Chile and Bolivia which are in the process of joining the regional bloc.
“I am certain that the agreement we reached with the European Union is not a point of arrival, but a point of departure,” said Macri, following a massive trade agreement reached with the European Union.
Mercosur has also announced the elimination of the roaming charge rate for data in its territories, a measure that must be approved by the parliaments of each nation. “With that, we are going to simplify communications both for those who travel through the region and those who live in border areas,” said the Argentine leader.
Macri also spoke about the political and economic crisis facing Venezuela, whose government, led by President Nicolas Maduro, is not recognised by Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, which consider Juan Guaido as “president in charge.” Venezuela was suspended from Mercosur by its political opponents in the region.
