Unions led a protest against the government’s austerity programme in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, as Argentinian President Mauricio Macri battles for re-election amid a recession.
Public sector workers of the ATE union wore their distinctive green as they marched through the capital. Banners, flags and drumming accompanied them on the demonstration.
Argentina is currently in the midst of an economic crisis, characterised by high inflation, a volatile currency and low industrial output.
Union members have seen minimal pay increases and reduced spending power as a result of government fiscal policy.
On Tuesday, Argentina’s biggest union – the General Confederation of Labour (CGT) – ramped up the pressure by backing a 24-hour national strike on May 29.
