Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon met with President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker in Brussels on Tuesday.

According to reports, Sturgeon’s visit to the Belgian capital was aimed at discussing how an independent Scotland could remain part of the European Union with European leaders.

The Scottish leader had announced previously in April her intentions to hold a new referendum on independence from the United Kingdom after Brexit.

A previous Scottish referendum on independence was defeated 55 percent to 45 percent, during a referendum in 2014 that was billed as a once-in-a-generation chance. During the 2016 referendum on the UK leaving the European Union, Scotland voted strongly to remain.
