Hundreds of people attended on the funeral of Viktoria Marinova, Bulgarian journalist who was brutally killed in Ruse on Friday.
The memorial service was held in the town where Marinova was born, lived and worked as a TV anchor.
One funeral attendee, Diana Petkova, said “I want [Victoria] to be remembered as a person dedicated to charitable causes, a person always ready to help you.”
Marinova was found raped and murdered in the north-eastern town of Ruse on Saturday. The first, and last, episode of her programme aired on September 30 and focused on an investigation into alleged corruption by Bulgarian businessmen and politicians involving EU funds. Her brutal murder has provoked anger both internally and from abroad, as well as speculation that the murder could be linked to her work as an investigative journalist.
On Wednesday, the Bulgarian government announced the arrest in Germany of a suspect Severin Nadejdov Krassimirov, a 21-year-old Bulgarian citizen from the city of Ruse. The suspect lived close to the crime scene and left the country for Germany on Sunday, the day after the rape and murder.
