Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Santiago on Friday after President Sebastian Pinera announced harsher penalties for rioters and looters.
Footage shows protesters throwing objects at police and police using water cannons in an attempt to disperse the crowds.
“We want an urgent constitutional assembly to change the constitution of Pinochet,” said one protester speaking to the crowd.
The current wave of demonstrations, considered to be the largest in decades, was sparked by a now-suspended metro fare hike. The demonstrations have since evolved into a movement with wider grievances aimed at addressing the rising cost of living, pension reform and police conduct during demonstrations amid calls for the resignation of Pinera.
