Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Santiago on Thursday, after President Sebastian Pinera announced harsher penalties for rioters and looters.
Footage shows water cannons being deployed by the police in an attempt to disperse the crowds.
People were seen shouting at the police, with some holding banners reading: “They want us to mind our own business because if divided we are forever defeated” and “When tyranny is law, the revolution is the order.”
The current wave of demonstrations, considered to be the largest in decades, was sparked by a now-suspended metro fare hike. The demonstrations have since evolved into a movement with wider grievances aimed at addressing the rising cost of living, pension reform and police conduct during demonstrations amid calls for the resignation of President Sebastian Pinera.
