German Chancellor Angela Merkel held a joint press conference with Croatian Prime minister Andrej Plenkovic in Zagreb on Wednesday while on visit to attend European People’s Party’s (EPP) annual congress.

“For Croatia, it is extremely important that by May, when joint meeting of leaders of EU and South East Europe is set to be held in Zagreb, we find solution about the continuation of accession process for North Macedonia and Albania,” The Croatian PM said during the press conference.

He added saying that “we will work together and will try to encourage both Albania and North Macedonia to take additional steps towards reforms. At the same time, our partners inside the EU and us will try to find solution for their process and try to include modification of existing methodology.”

“It would be right to create the conditions in order to take over the accession talks with North-Macedonia and Albania. Just like Andrej Plenkovic, I also regret the fact that we didn’t manage this in the last presidency period. We will certainly also talk about the future accession process and Croatia knows how to proceed, since their own negotiation process was not a long time ago” Merkel said.

Croatia will hold the presidency of the Council of the EU for 6 months in 2020 during which it announced it will also host an EU-Western Balkans summit.

The annual congress of the European People’s Party (EPP), Croatia’s ruling party, kicked off on Wednesday bringing together some 2,000 delegates and officials from more than 40 countries.
