Ecuador: Ex-president Correa ordered to stand trial over kidnapping charges

Ecuador’s National Court in Quito ordered former President Rafael Correa on Wednesday to stand trial for his alleged role in the abduction of a political opponent in 2012.

SOT, Caupolican Ochoa, Lawyer for Rafael Correa (Spanish): “We will talk to him (about whether he’ll stay in Belgium or not) and we will make a decision. Because with this fragility (of justice) there is really no future for a trial. But (he might come) if he’s given the guarantee of impartiality, that there’s going to be a respect for the most basic norms of the law, and not such an outrageous and obvious abuse such as the one we witnessed today.”

SOT, Fernando Balda, Alleged Victim (Spanish): “This resolution, I think, will help to avoid that the criminal executive orders of Rafael Correa happen ever again. And this will also be a warning for those who would like to follow his footsteps.”
