Preparation for Egypt’s proposed referendum on significant constitutional amendments has started in Cairo, with election signboards spread over different points of the city, as shown on footage from Thursday.

According to reports, the referendum is expected to take place over three consecutive days, as soon as April 20-22. During this time, voters living outside of their registered governorates will reportedly be able to vote in any polling station without prior registration.

The proposals, which were initiated by the pro-government parliamentary bloc ‘Support Egypt,’ would extend the presidential term from four to six years and give the president more control over the judiciary, allowing Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who came to power following a coup in 2014, to remain in power until 2030.
