A three-day referendum on constitutional changes got under way across Egypt, as seen in Cairo on Saturday. Voters started queuing outside some polling stations set up in schools and other public buildings.

The proposed changes would extend the presidential term from four to six years. They would potentially allow the current President Abdel Fatah el-Sisi to stay in power until 2030. The amendments would also significantly increase his authority over the judiciary.

The Civil Democratic Movement, an alliance of opposition parties, has called on voters to reject the amendments calling them “an assault on democracy.”
