In February 2019, Indian paramilitary troops were killed in Kashmir when 20-year-old Adil Ahmad Dar drove an explosive-filled car into their convoy. The suicide attack took India and Pakistan to the brink of war. What motivated the attacker? DW met his family to find out more about him. India and Pakistan have been locked in a territorial dispute over Kashmir for decades. In the heavily militarized Indian controlled part, an armed insurgency has been underway since 1989. Many people say they want independence. India has been accused of using brutal tactics to put down protests in Kashmir, with thousands of people sustaining eye injuries from pellet guns used by security forces. India claims the insurgency is bolstered by support from Pakistan, but the rebellion is increasingly drawing militants from within Indian-controlled Kashmir like Adil Ahmad Dar.
