Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Strasbourg on Saturday, as the ‘Yellow Vest’ demonstrations entered their ninth week.
Protesters set upon a man suspected of being a plainclothes police officer, pulling off his hat and manhandling him, before chasing him away from the protest.
Police deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd while demonstrators set fire to rubbish bins in the street. Protesters gathered near the European Parliament building but were blocked from reaching the location by riot police.
Figures released by the French Interior Ministry estimate that around 84,000 protesters took place in the demonstrations throughout France on Saturday, an increase of almost 50 percent from last week.
The ‘Yellow Vest’ movement, which started in November, was initially called in response to the French government’s planned fuel tax hike. The protests quickly widened into a general expression of anger with the status quo.
