Hundreds gathered for an unauthorised demonstration near the Georgian Parliament in Tbilisi on Thursday, to protest against the failure of the legislature to pass electoral reforms that were promised by the ruling party.

As a result of the failed vote, the demonstrators were prompted to protest outside parliament and blocked the roads leading to it.

Parliament discussed the amendments on Wednesday, when some of the ruling party lawmakers refused to support the changes.

The constitutional amendments aimed to change the parliamentary election system to an entirely proportional vote, beginning in 2020.

Large-scale political reforms were announced by the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, who previously promised to hold next year’s election under a fully proportional voting system.
