Thousands of Berliners were filmed flooding the streets leading up to the Brandenburg Gate in the German capital on Saturday, ahead of the main festivities on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

After several weeks of protests, the government of East Germany announced on November 9, 1989, that East Germans would be allowed to travel abroad without previous onerous restrictions and permitted permanent emigration from all crossings.

This paved the way for a series of events that led to the official demolition of the Wall that started on June 13, 1990, and finally to German Reunification on October 3, 1990. The Berlin Wall came to symbolize the ‘Iron Curtain’, which separated physically and ideologically Western Europe and the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War.
