Germany: Catalonia’s Quim Torra sees himself as ‘caretaker president’

Former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont and his successor Quim Torra held a joint press conference in Berlin on Tuesday. Torra arrived in the German capital just one day after his election.

At the press conference, he said he sees himself as a “caretaker president”, vowing “loyalty and gratitude to the legitimate President of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont.”

He announced that he would soon be sending a letter to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, expressing his readiness for dialogue “at any time and any place.”

His predecessor, Puigdemont, said Catalonia was in “good hands” now, and gave his full backing for the formation of the next government. “We need to restore all the damage made by Article 155,” he added.
