The main suspect in the Madeleine McCann case allegedly rented a small garden in Braunschweig, between 2013-2016 when he worked in the area, according to local reports and the chairman of the garden club, Friday.

“From 2013 until 2016 he had a garden here, he never attracted our attention, he more or less took care of his garden by himself,” said Jurgen Krumstroh, chairman of Kennelblick Garden Club.

“The only thing weird was his leaving in 2016. It was on April 2, he came to me and said ‘you can have my garden, I’m getting out of here’, ” Krumstoh added.

Police excavated another garden allotment linked to Christian B. near Braunschweig, but not yet the allotment at the Kennelblick club.

“It is hard to describe [him]. He was a loner,” Krumstoh said, adding that it is “unthinkable” for the club members what Christian B. has been accused of.

The Madeleine McCann case was revitalised in June when German authorities identified a new suspect, a 43-year-old German citizen currently serving a prison sentence in Kiel.

The man, known as Christian B., was last known to have lived in Braunschweig, roughly 70 kilometres (43.5 miles) away from Hanover. Madeleine McCann went missing from an apartment complex in the Portuguese town of Praia da Luz while her parents were eating dinner at a nearby tapas restaurant on May 3, 2007.
