Burglars stole communist-era medals and jewellery from the Stasimuseum in Berlin, housed in the former secret police headquarters, on Saturday.

The museum was closed to the public on Monday following the break-in. Police press officer Patricia Weber gave a statement regarding the incident.

Among the items stolen were an Order of Karl Marx and an Order of Lenin. Some earrings, pearls, gems and gold jewellery were also taken.

The museum director said the physical damage of the robbery could cost more than what was stolen.

The break-in came six days after diamonds worth millions of euros were stolen from the Green Vault in Dresden.
