German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned against the dangers of complacency in the fight against right-wing extremism during a speech at a military ceremony in Berlin on Tuesday – the 75th anniversary of a failed assassination attempt against Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

The ceremony and military parade were also attended by Defence Minister and party leader of the Christian Democratic Union, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer.

“The sacrifice that they [opponents of national socialism] made, remains a warning to us,” Merkel said in a speech to members of Germany’s armed forces. “They warn us to be vigilant, and to confront right-wing extremism, anti-Semitism and racism in all their forms.”

Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg led an unsuccessful assassination plot against Adolf Hitler on June 20, 1944. He and around 200 other co-conspirators were captured and executed.
