Former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont said that the trial of the Catalan separatist leaders and activists, which started in Madrid was a test for the judiciary of the Spanish system. Puigdemont spoke in Berlin on Tuesday.

Puigdemont also demanded answers from the European Union institutions on why, in his view, they are concerned more by the situation in Venezuela than by the trial in Madrid.

“We have now in Madrid, the capital of one of the state members, approve that Europe needs to improve its democracy. For that, the trial that has started in Madrid concerns, I insist, all democracies in the world,” he added.

The trial of the Catalan separatist leaders and activists over their roles in the 2017 independence bid, kicked off at the Spanish Supreme Court in Madrid.

Former Catalan vice president Oriol Junqueras, former interior minister Joaquim Forn, former president of the Catalan parliament Carme Forcadell are among the 12 political leaders and activists standing trial for their part in the referendum and subsequent push for independence from Spain.

The 12 accused are facing charges including rebellion, sedition and the misuse of public funds. Those accused of rebellion and misuse of public funds are facing prison terms of up to 25 years.
