Former leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) Martin Schulz lambasted co-leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) Alexander Gauland and denounced Gauland’s views as reminiscent of Nazism during a debate on immigration and far-right violence that took place in the Bundestag on Wednesday.
“The reduction of complex political situations to one single subject, as a rule about minority groups in the country, is a traditional method of fascism. We heard this again today… The immigrants are to blame for everything. We have heard similar words in this house once before,” Schulz said, referring to Hitler speaking in the Reichstag.
