Germany: Steinmeier defends press freedom and democracy at Frankfurt Book Fair

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier emphasised the importance of defending freedom of the press and democracy at the Frankfurt Book Fair on Wednesday.

Speaking at an event entitled ‘On Opining: How to Defend Freedom in Turbulent Times,’ with Croatian author and winner of the International Literature Award Ivana Sajko, Steinmeier spoke about the importance of freedom of the press, human rights and open dialogue. He also discussed the issue of right-wing populism in Germany and other neighbouring European countries.

Steinmeier also opened the Frankfurt Pavilion, a new event venue for cultural and literary events.

The Frankfurt Book Fair is the world’s largest trade book fair, with over 7,300 exhibitors from 102 countries.
