German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas welcomed United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen to the Foreign Ministry in Berlin on Tuesday to discuss the situation in the Middle East.
Maas says that a political process needs to include all demographic groups in Syria to achieve sustainability and continuity. Maas further stressed that a nationwide truce is needed.
Pedersen added that a focus on the Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) is still required and that Israeli bombardments of Syrian territory are another issue that needs addressing.
“[We] need to see a new beginning inside of Syria, we need to build trust between the different communities and to make sure that we move forward in parallel with the political process,” Pedersen said.
Pedersen was been appointed as Special Envoy for Syria by United Nations General Secretary Antonio Guterres in October 2018. This is his first official visit to Berlin in the role.
