Hong Kong police have forced thousands of protesters away from the legislature building, using tear gas and pepper spray to clear the area.
Debate on the controversial extradition plan has been delayed as activists blocked politicians from entering the building.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam has described the protests as organised riots and called for calm to be restored.
