Chief Executive Carrie Lam and other officials attended the annual flag-raising ceremony and later a banquet marking 23rd anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Wednesday, just hours after the newly-passed national security law came into effect.

Officials attended a ceremony and later a banquet to mark the anniversary of the handover of the territory to China from British rule.

The controversial national security law came into effect at 23:00 local time on June 30, just an hour before the 23rd anniversary of the city-state’s handover.

The contentious law punishes crimes of sedition, secession and collusion with foreign forces, threatening the region’s autonomy as laid out under the principle of ‘one country, two systems.’
