Iraq: Drone captures world”s biggest cemetery in Najaf amid coronavirus surge

Aerial footage captured the world’s biggest cemetery Wadi al-Salam in Najaf on Monday, as Iraq deals with a spike of deaths related to the coronavirus. Najaf governor Louay Al Yasiri was reported to oppose the burials of bodies of coronavirus patients brought from other parts of the country, due to reported higher risk of contamination among locals.

Thousands of graves were seen from the air in what is considered to be one of the most sacred places for Shiites.

According to reports, the risk of coronavirus infection in Najaf has increased due to the number of bodies of coronavirus patients buried there, with already dozens members of the city’s medical staff believed to have contracted the disease.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, Iraq has reported over 62,200 cases of coronavirus and over 2,500 related deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
