Police were seen patrolling Rome streets as Celtic FC fans flooded the Italian capital ahead of SS Lazio clash on Thursday.

The fans were wearing green and white outfits, chanting and waving the Irish flag with Pope Francis on it.

The Celtic fans also gathered near Flann O’Brien – the Irish pub, where two fans had been injured in a Wednesday stabbing committed by masked men.

Although the injuries were not life-threatening, both men were hospitalised. One has since been released.

A separate incident reportedly saw some 15 hooded men targeting another bar, throwing chairs and smashing windows in a bid to get inside.

The attacks come amid heightened tensions between the two clubs after Celtic fans unfurled ‘illicit’ banners at the previous fixture in Glasgow, one depicting former Italian leader Benito Mussolini hanging upside down, and Lazio Ultras were seen throwing fascist salutes.
