Protesters crammed into Bologna’s Piazza Maggiore for a silent ‘sardine’ flash mob on Thursday to condemn the visit of League leader Matteo Salvini.

Carrying sardine-shaped signs and emblems, protesters took a jab at Salvini’s claim 100,000 people had rallied at Piazza Maggiore for his 2015 visit. Organisers argued the main square could hold no more than 6,000 people only if they squeeze together like sardines.

Elsewhere protesters flooded the streets where police deployed water canons to disperse the crowds.
