Italy: UN’s Libya Rep tells Europe to focus on conflict, not migration

The Head of the UN’s Support Mission in Libya Ghassan Salame called on European nations to stop being “obsessed” by migration flows from Libya and focus more on the conflict in the North African country, during a joint press conference with Italian Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi in Rome on Wednesday.

“You have around 700,000 non-Libyans living in Libya. Not all of them, not the majority of them, not even a minority of them, very few of them want to cross the Mediterranean,” Salame said before adding “stop being obsessed with the detention centre.”

“I hope that the Europeans care from now on more about Libya and more about geo-strategy in the Mediterranean and are not obsessed by a single issue,” he said.

Milanesi rallied against a military solution for Libya, adding that “civilians in Libya are submitted to a constant risk of rising dangers, so humanitarian care is very important. We hope for ceasefires in order to deal with the humanitarian crisis the best way possible.”
