Russia’s Special Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev said that US military forces “have no legal justification for their presence on Syrian territory,” during an interview in Astana on Tuesday, following the ninth round of Syria talks.
“They used the threat from IS and Daesh as a pretext, but after the Syrian-Iraq border was absolutely liberated, and it is now under the control of government forces, what fighting with Daesh are we talking about? There is some hidden agenda, we are fully aware of it,” he said.
“We believe that setting up the de-escalation zone in Eastern Ghouta was the only right step that let us take the pressure off Damascus,” he continued, adding that Western countries were responsible for the lack of humanitarian access and the alleged chemical attack.
The ninth round of Syria talks took place in Astana from May 14-15.
