Protesters, including retired military personnel, rallied in the Riad Al Solh Square in Beirut against possible pension cuts, as footage filmed on Friday shows.

Veteran Antoine Hayek who took part in the protest said that “even the three percent [of pension benefits] is not touchable.”

This cut was part of the government’s plan to adopt an austerity budget. Following the first wave of protests, the article stipulating a three-percent pension cut was removed from the budget draft on Tuesday, according to media citing Defence Minister Elias Bou Saab.

Veterans ask for the removal of any budget cuts that would affect them.

On Thursday, the Cabinet reportedly decided to reduce the deficit to an eight percent of current year’s GDP with all ministries’ budgets to be reduced by 20 percent. The meeting on the draft will continue this Friday.
