Ruptly is live from Hong Kong as protesters take to the streets for a “mass rally” on Sunday, June 16, to demonstrate against the extradition bill that has sparked outrage.
The anti-establishment Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions and student associations have urged members to join the strike and reprise the protests that drew hundreds of thousands on Sunday, June 9, and Wednesday, June 12.
In February, the Hong Kong government proposed amending its extradition laws so that the city can accept extradition requests from countries with which it has no prior agreement, such as mainland China. Hong Kong companies said they would suspend work or even allow flexible office hours to accommodate workers planning to demonstrate near the city’s Legislative Council.
The second reading over the extradition bill was scheduled for Wednesday, June 12, but was postponed due to the severe clashes between police and protesters.
