Gunfire broke out in the Mexican city of Culiacan on Thursday, as security forces patrolling the area came under fire from members of a drug cartel, soon after the capture of one of the sons of imprisoned drug kingpin Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman.

Footage shows people seeking cover inside a building, which appears to be an outlet of the US fast food chain Burger King, as an exchange of fire can be heard outside.

After hours of fires and gun battles taking place throughout the city, Mexican authorities withdrew and released Ovidio Guzman Lopez, to avoid further violence.

According to Mexican security chief Alfonso Durazo, the operation was called off to safeguard the tranquility of Culiacan, a stronghold of the Sinaloa cartel.
