Dozens of protesters gathered in front of the Moroccan Parliament in Rabat on Tuesday, demanding that the government pass an abortion bill which has been pending since 2016.
Footage shows the protesters waving signs, banners, and placing a line of dolls on the floor symbolizing the number of abortions taking place clandestinely every day in unsafe conditions.
“What we ask is to be able to perform abortion inside hospitals to be safe and in healthy conditions in sterile environments with anaesthesia, from a professional gynaecologist and operations should be performed inside operating rooms,” said Dr. Taoufk El Cheraybi, a medical doctor and one of the protesters.
The bill, which has been in legislative limbo since 2016, would allow for legal abortions in the case of rape, incest and if the foetus has severe genetic abnormalities.
