Russia: Infantino calls USA-Mexico-Canada bid ‘historic’ in FIFA

FIFA President Gianni Infantino described the bidding process for the 2026 World Cup as ‘historic’, during a press conference in Moscow on Wednesday, after the ‘United Bid’, consisting of the USA, Mexico and Canada, won the right to host the 2026 tournament.

Infantino said, “for the first time, the vote by the congress went extremely well.” He also said FIFA learned a great deal in terms of the “wording of the regulation and some unintended consequences.”

The joint-North American bid won 134 votes (67 percent) compared to 65 (33 percent) for the rival Moroccan bid, with one abstention.

Infantino also stated that there is an increase of 20 percent in the development fund. “Each association will receive six million over four year, instead of five.”
