Russia: Putin praises FIFA’s commitment to ‘sports without politics’

Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed FIFA members gathered at Moscow’s Expocentre for the 68th FIFA Congress on Wednesday.

Welcoming the delegates from 211 associations and six continental confederations affiliated to FIFA, the Russian leader thanked the organisation for its commitment to the principle of keeping politics out of sport.

” Russia has always adhered to this approach and it strives for the closest cooperation with all those who are inclined to develop and strengthen the creative nature of sport,” Putin said. “Our goal is that all our guests – from football stars to simple fans – feel the hospitality and cordiality of our people.”

FIFA President Gianni Infantino, on his behalf, said: “From the bottom of our heart a big, big, big thank you to you, Mr. Putin, for your engagement, for your passion, for making us really feel part of the same team.”
