Russia: The Siberian Sweeney Todd! – Dare to have your hair cut with an axe?

Russian hairdresser Daniil Istomin offers risky haircuts by chopping clients’ hair with an axe, as demonstrated in Novosibirsk on Friday.

According to Istomin, the idea came to him as he was trying “to come up with something interesting with my profession, come up with some tricks,” adding that “It all started with a banal ‘let’s try being blindfolded’, then ‘try with two hands’. Eventually it came to the axe.”

Speaking about the unusual way of doing his work, the hairstylist contended that it was “easier to give a haircut with an axe then with scissors.” The unusual barber explained his approach: “I just took some basics of geometry, combined it with my profession and shifted the angles into slightly different variations.”

Istomin became popular after a video of him cutting the hair of a 19-year-old woman at an entertainment show in a restaurant was shown by the American television program ‘Right This Minute.’

SOT, Daniil Istomin, Hairdresser (Russian): “In order not to have a hang-up about work, I tried to come up with something interesting with my profession, come up with some tricks. So this is how it happened. It all started with a banal ‘let’s try being blindfolded’, then ‘try with two hands’. Eventually it came to the axe. It came with experiments with various instruments.”

SOT, Daniil Istomin, hairdresser (Russian): “I did not really learn at all. I just took some basics of geometry, combined it with my profession and shifted the angles into slightly different variations and it was so easy. In fact, I always say that it is easier to give a haircut with an axe then with scissors. Why? Because there you need to guess the angle, and here with one cut you do what is done with scissors with ten cuts. Therefore, in fact, it is easier. If any professional looks at it, he will say he can do this too. But for some reason no one dares, and I decided to try and show it.”
