Russia: ‘When in Russia, do as Russians do’ – Lavrov shares a laugh with Iranian FM

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergei Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, shared a laugh together as they met for bilateral talks in Sochi, Wednesday. Lavrov welcomed his Iranian counterpart joking, ‘When in Russia, do as Russians do’.

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia (Russian): “We paid special attention to cooperation in the field of nuclear energy. The first unit of the station in Bushehr already supplies electricity at full capacity. Negotiations are underway about preparations for construction of the second unit. We also discussed major projects on railway electrification in Iran that are soon set for implementation and construction of thermal power plants.”

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia (Russian): “For obvious reasons, special attention was paid to Syria. We confirmed all those agreements that formed the basis of the Astana [peace] process as well as creation of de-escalation zones. Tomorrow and the day after our representatives, together with their Turkish counterparts and observers from the United States, Jordan and UN representatives, will be finishing the ongoing work in Astana that is focused on creating a safe zone in Idlib area. We look forward to [witnessing] the success of this meeting.”

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia (Russian): “We agreed with Mr. Zarif to continue our dialogue at the session of the UN General Assembly where we’re going to be next week.”

SOT, Mohamed Javad Zarif, Iranian Minister for Foreign Affairs, (Farsi): “Also about Syria we spoke, we had a good cooperation in the field of fighting terrorism and also had a good cooperation in the field of making peace in Syria that tomorrow and the day after tomorrow in Astana we will continue this cooperation with the presence of our another neighbour “Turkey”, we hope that in coming meetings, we can have more successes in making peace, humanitarian aid and start the political process in Syria and in this regard we negotiated and also avoiding tension in Persian Gulf is one of our goals and in this regard good coordination is done.”

SOT, Mohamed Javad Zarif, Iranian Minister for Foreign Affairs, (Farsi): “About JCPOA both sides emphasised the being non-negotiable of JCPOA and the necessity of obeying the commitments of JCPOA that Islamic Republic of Iran has done all its commitments, unfortunately some sides weren’t commitment and we emphasised today that it is the international and multilateral agreement and all be commitment to this agreement.”
