Footage filmed on the streets of Ontinyent in eastern Spain on Friday shows the destruction caused by the floods that affected the city a day before.

The Riverbed of the Clariano River has flooded a multitude of homes in the city due to the torrential rains that have fallen recently and caused the flood.

“We ran away, with fear, because what happened here had never been seen before. I’ve been living here for 18 years, but I have never seen anything like this,” explained Saib, one of the residents of the damaged houses.

Rain gauges have recorded an accumulated of 297 litres of water, this being the largest amount ever since they began recording in 1917.

According to local sources, the city council will request the declaration of a catastrophic zone for an episode of historical rains.

The arrival of a meteorological phenomenon, commonly known as Cold Drop, to the southeast of Spain has caused severe damage, including the death of at least four people. Hundreds of people have been evacuated and traffic has been disrupted on at least 40 roads.
