Spanish Civil Guard members were filmed entering the Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya in Barcelona on Tuesday, as part of a search for documents related to the 2017 Catalan independence referendum.

Footage reportedly shows Spanish Civil Guard members dressed in civilian clothes entering the building, ahead of the search which comes after a court ordered a probe into the referendum, reports say.

The judge is said to have agreed to file administrative proceedings requesting documents in relation to the hiring of international observers for the referendum.

The Catalan independence referendum took place on October 1, 2017. It was subsequently ruled out as illegal by the Spanish Constitutional Court, prompting protests in Catalonia.
