Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane said Spain star Isco ‘wants to play’ at a press conference in the Spanish capital on Friday after the playmaker was frozen out under the Frenchman’s predecessors Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari.

“They know that we have 11 matches left and they know that I will need to count on all players and Isco is one of them. Anyway, I will count on Isco and the rest of the squad to the fullest,” he said.

Twenty-six-year-old Isco, who is regarded as one of Real and Spain’s brightest talents, will be relishing Zidane’s shock return to the hotseat after finding himself relegated to the bench under Solari and left out of La Roja’s latest squad.

Another former stalwart, Marcelo, was also left out regularly under the two former managers but Zidane said he sees no problem with the Brazilian.

“I see Marcelo happy and motivated. For me that’s the most important thing. I’m happy to see Marcelo this way,” he said.

Zidane will hope to steady the ship upon his return after Madrid endured a horror week, firstly being knocked out by Ajax in the Champions League and then suffering two defeats to arch-rivals Barcelona – effectively ending all hopes of a trophy for Los Blancos this season.

His side face Celta Vigo at 15:15 GMT on Saturday, his first match since retaking the hotseat.
