Real Madrid midfielder and German national player, Toni Kroos looked pleased with himself at a press conference in Madrid on Monday, saying that “Today is a very happy day, very happy for me,” after signing on the dotted line for a four year extension with Real Madrid until 2023.

The deal comes in the wake of widespread speculation about his potential departure from the Spanish team by local media after the club’s disastrous season with Kroos admitting “no player has been at his top level like previous years.”

Real Madrid finished third in La Liga and were knocked out of the Champions League in the last 16.

In the expected overhaul of the squad, the buzz is strongest around a possible transfer by Paris Saint-Germain’s young superstar and world champion, Kylian Mbappe with Kroos saying “I like Mbappe as a player, but that question is not for me because I can not buy it, I have a good contract but I can not buy it, it’s a question for the club.”

Kroos arrived at Real from Bayern Munich in 2014 and has since made 233 appearances, offering up 59 assists and 13 goals in that time.
