Thousands of protesters supporting Catalonia’s unity with Spain gathered in Barcelona on Friday, on Spain’s national day, to protest against Catalonian secessionism.

Protesters with Spanish flags gathered in Catalunya Square and chanted slogans against the movement of secession from Spain.

Miguel Martinez, the president of the platform for ‘Tabarnia,’ a fictional region within Catalonia mocking the movement of independence, accused the “nationalists” of attempting “to break our dream to have a country as beautiful and gorgeous as Spain […] inside a strong and united Europe.”

According to the Catalan police, some 65,000 protesters attended the pro-unity demonstration.

October 12 is Spain’s annual national holiday commemorating the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s first arrival in the Americas.
