Spain: Protest against re-burial of Franco’s remains in Madrid cathedral

Around a thousand people protested in Madrid on Thursday evening against a petition from the family of former Spanish dictator Francisco Franco requesting that his remains be transferred from the Valley of the Fallen to the cathedral of La Almudena.

Protesters marched from Puerta del Sol to La Almudena cathedral, holding pictures of victims of Francoism and shouting “They shall not pass,” among other chants.

The Valley of the Fallen was conceived by the dictator, who died in 1975, to honour and bury those who died during the Spanish Civil War. It remains controversial due to its use of Francoist symbols and the involvement of forced labour in its construction.

The current Socialist government of Pedro Sanchez plans to exhume Franco’s body before the end of the 2018.
