Thousands of Catalan independence supporters gathered in Barcelona’s Plaza Espana on Tuesday, with some demonstrators pouring dishwashing liquid into the square’s fountain to make foam.
The protest action references claims by former delegate of the Spanish Government in Catalonia, Enric Millo, that dishwashing liquid was deployed at polling stations to trip up police during the 2017 referendum.
Demonstrator Alfred Molina referred to the claims, which Millo made while testifying in the trial of Catalan independence leaders, as an “incredible exaggeration”.
According to reports, around 2,000 attended the protest called by the Committees of Defense of the Republic (CDR). Protesters gathered near the central police station of the Mossos d’Esquadra, carrying posters decrying police abuses and demanding the release of imprisoned Catalan politicians.
