River Plate held a training session just outside Madrid on Thursday ahead of second leg of the Copa Libertadores final against their arch-rivals Boca Juniors.
Marcelo Gallardo’s team trained for an hour at Real Madrid’s official training ground in Valdebebas.
Defender Javier Pinola reminded supporters that “it is just a football match”. He dismissed talk of Sunday’s game being an opportunity to clean up Argentinian football, instead blaming the “state of the country” for the country’s reputation abroad for football violence.
The Copa Libertadores final between River Plate and Boca Juniors will be played at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Sunday after a draw in the first leg. It is widely seen as the most important game in Argentina’s footballing history.
The match was originally scheduled for November 24 at River’s Monumental stadium. It was twice postponed after Boca players were injured in a bus attack by home fans throwing projectiles.
