Spain: Separatist Torra succeeds Puigdemont as Catalan President

Separatist politician Quim Torra was elected as the new Catalan President in Barcelona on Monday in a slim 66:65 vote by MPs.

Torra proposed the parliament should invest in Carles Puigdemont as Catalan President, who hand selected Torra as his successor after he was blocked from returning to office.

“I thank Puigdemont for his generosity, for his act of responsibility,” he said.

Torra ended his remarks with ‘long live a free Catalonia,’ words from the former Catalan nationalist politician Manuel Carrasco Formiguera.

Former Catalan president Puigdemont is currently on bail in Germany after he was arrested near the Danish border.
